My approach to photography has evolved as I have spent time in various landscapes; however the main objective remains the same.

I wish to pursue and engage the underlying and unsettled environmental presence. The landscapes that I found myself accustomed to in Goteborg, Sweden where I grew up were vastly different than the geography I encountered in Perth, Australia and in Vancouver, and a difference too was noted in the treatment and reverence of the landscape.

Thus my work has grown from a place of curiosity and wonder to a more stable platform of exploration with a critical view, founded by a primary passion for the natural beauty of landscape photography and

a need to interact with the moral challenges it offers.

My intention is to create photographs that hold narratives of critical commentary behind an evoking landscape. The aim behind this approach is to generate a dialogue with the viewer, creating an embodied experience based on one’s own knowledge. Through investigating the idea of an affect response within art, I wish to encourage critical thinking and sustained scanning of social landscapes. The many different approaches to

the landscape that I examine and the traditions so embedded within the genre are also tied to sensibilities, such as time and the nature of looking and issues of space. Not in all photographs does this over arching thesis reside but it is what fuels and inspires the direction in which my photographic practice has lead me.

Currently I find myself captivated by scenery both containing and lacking the presence of people. Documenting interactions, moments and places with a presence of human habitation framing the foreground is an approach that fell on the sidelines in the search for the subtle, altered and unnoticed landscape. Realizing that such a subject matter nonetheless holds significance through its direct correlation to the shaping of the

landscape that I am capturing, it felt important to continue documenting the actions of people.

The project ‘Altered landscapes’ is an ongoing series exploring the undefined lines between nature and industry, depicting natural landscapes in altered and affected locations. I am through this process examining the effects of public awareness and immediate response to subtle alterations that affect land over time.

To Improve by Critical Editing’ is a project that examines the notion of natural beauty and how definitions change our understanding and appreciation of what holds true to the word.

‘Passage and Growth’ is a series from which the photograph ‘to improve by critical editing’ sprung. I photographed around the Australian rain forest on the west coast and the contrast between the constructed and the natural intrigued me. I wanted to explore the relationship between the almost untouched land and the used.
